6 Expert Advice on Starting a Profitable Blog in Nigeria
Starting a blog in Nigeria and making it profitable requires more than just setting up a website. It demands strategy, dedication, and insights from those who have already walked the path to success.
Here, I’ve gathered valuable advice from seasoned bloggers, both Nigerian and international, who have blazed the trail in the world of online content creation.
Lisa Sicard’s Proven Blogging Strategies
- Start off learning SEO and using it on your blog from the start – That was my biggest mistake. Use Search Console or a tool like Serp-Stat or at the least, RankMath or Yoast plugins, which offer free versions. Even with those plugins you need to research the keywords, know what people are looking for, and find low-competitive ones. Then have patience, it will take months or a year to really rank well.
- Next, use AI to help you get going if you hit writer’s block – I love the RightBlogger AI tool for bloggers with over 45 different ways to use it. However, do not use any links from it and edit with your own flavor and story into the post. Do not use it just as is. This tool even offers a keyword research tool within it!
- Be consistent – Start off once a week or once a month. Then if you can do it those times add another one to the schedule. Keep on going until you have at least 100 posts. Then you will want to update the older ones over time unless they are evergreen posts, which by the way you do need a few of.
Shamsudeen Adeshokan’s 3 Essential Tips for New Bloggers
Starting a blog today in Nigeria is similar to other parts of the world. The fundamental principles are the same, just like any other business.
You must be prepared to give it your best, be patient, be committed to learning, and invest in your blog.
If I am starting a blog today as a beginner, here are my three tips to follow:
- Define Your Niche and Audience
The first step toward building a successful blog is picking the right niche. Please choose a subject you are passionate about and knowledgeable in, as this will make it easier to produce high-quality content consistently.
Understand your target audience’s interests, problems, and needs, and tailor your content to address them. A well-defined niche and audience will set the foundation for your blog’s success.
- Invest in Quality Content and Consistency
In an era of content saturation, quality and consistency are king. Create valuable, informative, and engaging content that provides real value to your readers.
Focus on producing evergreen content that remains relevant over time. Establish a regular posting schedule to keep your audience engaged and returning for more. Consistency helps build trust and authority in most niches.
- Don’t Blog for Adsense
Don’t create a blog because of Google AdSense. Starting a blog solely because of Adsense is a recipe for disaster. I see many bloggers going this route and feel sorry for them.
Think about it: what if the Adsense team never approves your blog? Will you quit and look for something else to do? Moreover, Adsense is not a dependable blog monetization method. Your account can be suspended for no reason at any time.
Adsense is just one of many ways to make money from blogging. There is affiliate marketing, consulting, freelancing, sponsored posts, selling your products, etc.
Besides, you need thousands of monthly traffic from tier 1 countries to make decent money from Adsense. In other monetization tactics like affiliate marketing, consulting, and selling your products, you can make consistent monthly income with fewer traffic numbers.
Bonus Tip: Stay open to learning and adapting. The digital landscape constantly evolves, so be willing to experiment with new strategies, tools, and technologies. Attend webinars, read industry blogs, and seek out opportunities for professional development to stay ahead in the blogging world.
Remember that blogging is a journey that takes time and effort. Stay patient, persistent, and passionate about your chosen niche, and you’ll be well on your way to building a successful blog in today’s technology world.
Lastly, blogging is not a hobby but a business. You must see it as a business that requires investments.
Mastering Blogging Essentials: Oyekunle Damola’s Insights
- Ignore posting frequency – A common advice is to post regularly to keep your audience engaged. However, focusing on fewer, high-impact articles can also be super effective. It allows you to spend more time on research and high-quality writing.
- Quality – Use compelling visuals, SEO-friendly headlines, and well-researched content to attract, retain, and keep readers engaged
- Leverage Social Media – Platforms like Nairaland, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram should be used to increase reach by sharing content on them, interacting with their audience, and even running paid ads to boost visibility.
Optimizing Your Content for Your Audience
- Blog about what people want, and not what you feel they want. If you want to do the latter, then do it “if and only if”, you’ve already had the audience, or you are an influencer, else, after 1-3 years of writing what you feel, you will give up on the easy way out words of “blogging is dead”.
In summary, always optimize your content FOR YOUR audience and NOT TO your audience.
- One of the fastest ways to make money with a blogging business is to offer and blog about the service/gig you render. For example, web design, graphic design, Visual Artist, and etc.
I mean, this is one of the secret sauces of SaaS startups with hundreds of millions of dollars in gross per year.
- The blogging business is first, Smart Work, then Hard work, and never a FAST RICH SCHEME. In retrospect, let me be the first to break the news.
Strategies for Starting Strong: Teemu Raitaluoto’s Insights
- Focus on low-cost and easy-to-use tools in the beginning. Good tools go a long way.
- Pick a target audience and write about things they are interested in. Be very niche about it and check Google results for any direct competition. E.g. “Content marketing for B2B tech startups” could be niche enough to start with. And think of starting a blog like starting a business.
- Don’t forget optimization outside your blog, e.g. link building, we only had 20 articles + 50 links for 3k monthly traffic. Most marketers will tell you only content matters. If you’re not a great writer, focus more on links.
Bonus Tip: Look at the top 3 results on Google for your target keyword and aim to create better content. This SEO method, by the way, is called the Skyscraper SEO Strategy, and it was invented by Brian Dean of Backlinko.
Jo Linsdell’s Pro Tips: Blogging with Passion, Consistency, and Planning
- Blog about things you’re passionate about. Not only will it mean you always have content to post but it will also come across to your readers.
- Consistency matters. Whilst posting frequently to your blog is great, it’s more important to be consistent in your posting. If you can’t manage to publish a new blog post every day that’s fine. Set up a schedule that works for you. A lot of bloggers post just a couple of times a week.
- Schedule content in advance. Life gets hectic for us all from time to time so it’s a good idea to plan ahead. This will also help you maintain consistent posting as you can set new posts to publish on the same days, at the same time each week.
These expert insights serve as a roadmap for anyone looking to start a profitable blogging business in Nigeria. While the path may be challenging, remember that blogging is not just a hobby; it’s a business. Invest in your blog, focus on quality, and embrace the wisdom of those who have paved the way for blogging success.

How did I miss this wonderful comment?!
Well, I’ve been on and off blogging for the past 3yrs… I’m back now though.
I’m super sure you must have gotten around the question you asked…. if not, I will share a tip or two: personally, I feel finding a niche is the same as finding your purpose. You just have to know what makes you tick; what you’re passionate about.. and you’re good to go.
I would write down all the things I’m passionate and interested in… things that make me super excited… I would make sure that they can easily be monetized, then will go out and try to validate the idea.
That’s it.
